Early shot of Strathmore Cover

I've had a few people ask me if I had any in-progress images of the drawing I did of Erin for the Strathmore 400 Series Drawing Pads.  Here is the only shot I grabbed in progress after sketching in her eyes...

iPad Doodling

Spending a Sunday afternoon catching a little football and doodling on the iPad with the "Paper" app. This was from a somewhat dark photo image of my assistant, Erin that I pulled up on my iPhone and then scribbled away on the iPad - kinda fun for a change.

White Room

This is my latest and largest oil painting, "White Room" -- 5' x 8' with 8 figures. It's my first in a series of paintings that will have a similar palette and subject but will each be unique in composition and size. This is a new direction for me - incorporating more abstracted elements In the piece along with the figures. I captured the images of the models - in this case - 6 (2 of the models appear twice in the painting) - in 3 separate photo shoots with thousands of images.  Thanks to Erin, Jillian, Liz, Allison, Megan and Bailey.  And a special thanks to Erin and Stephanie at the Leedy-Voulkos for allowing me to use the gallery space for the photo shoots.  This painting is already sold, but more to come.

New Painting - detail

Here is a first peek at the detail from a new painting I've been working on in my home studio. It's my largest to date (5' x 8') and I hope to have it completed in the next couple days.

Portrait of the Artist

Shuffling around the social-net this weekend and not getting much painting doneDiscovered "Kik" (thanks Janelle) - another mobile communication tool.  Thought I would post this article "Portrait of the Artist" (that would be me) featured in July's "435 South" magazine.  Kudos to the writer Brandon Reynolds, who presents some incredibly perceptive observations about art and artists.  Here's a quote from the article where the writer is speaking with Erin Smyth, the model for the Strathmore Drawing Pad cover and many other pieces of mine...

"The face that launched a thousand Strathmore covers doesn’t feel the weight of being the cover girl for aspiring artists: “A lot of people probably assume that I’m not real.”  She says Rose gets asked often is she’s an actual person. Which presents a counterpoint to his goal of creating images of people who look “real.” Look at enough of his work and that balance becomes clear: His paintings are more vibrant, vivid, expressive than what the photograph will capture, but they also go beyond the standards of realism, of life. They present a person more lively than normal life, you might say, more emotional or expressive or beautiful than what we encounter in the day-to-day. This is why people gravitate to the images, drawn by a vision of exaggerated life, the suggestion of the sublime. It’s why people keep coming around to see naked old David. One might argue that, in the case of Rose’s paintings, it takes two people, two whole sets of emotions — painter and subject — to evoke such beyond normal results. Strictly speaking, the image belongs to neither of them. Which means it belongs to we who look upon it."

"Satin"

Here is an image of my latest oil painting, "Satin" - it's 48" x 48" and the 3rd in a new series of overexposed faces and figures.  The model for this painting is artist Kara Rooney - an incredible multi-media artist from New York.  The piece is currently on display at ARTichokes Gallery in Leawood at 105th and Mission.

New Blog - First Post

So after much thought (ok, like an hour) and an onslaught of pressure (that may be somewhat overstated) - I'm starting a blog. If you happen to see this, please don't expect too much in the way of thrills and excitement when you venture to this remote corner of the blogosphere. My grand scheme for this site is to link off my website and Facebook pages, and provide a space to show new paintings in progress (and finished), updates about shows and exhibits, coverage of my work in publications, and some random thoughts about art, including other artists I admire and follow.  I'll do my best not to bore you to tears - maybe just a relaxed sedative state of mind - but no tears.
